They began arriving before dawn, many with their partners - some carrying signs supporting gay marriage, others with their children. A crowd of opponents to same-sex marriage also showed up. By 10:00 am when the California Supreme Court was to deliver its landmark ruling the area was jammed.

With the landmark ruling comes considerable celebration. This is a hard-fought and well-earned victory. However, we must remain vigilant. Those who oppose same-sex marriage will be fighting to get their amendment on the ballot for the fall. Soon enough, gays and lesbians will have to fight for their newly won rights at the polls. We need to make that happen.
