Polygamy is being practiced in the US today, and the authorities turn a blind eye to it unless there is some indication that minors are being abused. I would bet that there are a fair number of people who have a spouse and "support" another significant other on the side. Then there are those who don't "support" that other, but are emotionally and physically involved with another outside marriage, and finally those who "play around."
Tell me, how much damage legalized polygamy could do to a society like that?
