Federal Judge Hears Gay Button Case

Gay & Lesbian – A Florida high school is "trampling the First Amendment rights of students who support equal rights for gay people", a federal judge was told on Monday. Heather Gillman, a junior at Ponce de Leon High School, is suing the school after she was told she could not wear buttons, stickers or clothing that supported LGBT civil rights.

I hope Heather and her classmates win this lawsuit on behalf of gay and lesbian students throughout Florida. Frankly, I think it ought to be a class-action lawsuit against all the idiotic districts that think prohibiting this kind of speech is acceptable. What if the same buttons had the name of a Presidential Candidate on them. For example, "Young Gays and Lesbians for Hillary Clinton"? Wouldn't that be political free speech protected by the First Amendment? I thought such issues were sacrosanct.

Sans those words, the buttons are out according to the district. The ACLU should win this case hands down.

As with the removal of the Ten Commandments from schools, the removal of prayer from teachers and coaches, the removal of anything that has to do with Christianity.
