Governator to Fight Anti Gay Marriage Amendment

Gay & Lesbian – California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says that if an initiative to ban gay marriage qualifies for the November ballot, he's prepared to fight it. California's governor spoke Friday in San Diego at the convention of the Log Cabin Republicans, the nation's largest gay Republican group.

Despite vetoing two bills which would have legalized marriage equality for gays and lesbians, Governor Schwarzenegger has been an ally for our community. We need more allies like the Governor and the respect he draws from other moderate Republicans. I disagree with his tactics, but he is right in that such decisions must ultimately come from the people if they are going to be accepted rather than overturned by future generations. I do not like it, but that's the pragmatic way of approaching marriage equality.

amen man, you gotta love the Schwarzenegger, he's a liberal republican. We reelected him when we could have had the ultra-lib, I think this is a bigger victory over the neocons. Like we took one of their "own" a guy who was practically a Shrub Toady and turned him into the Toast de San Fransisco, a win all around!

Schwarzenegger is what the Republican Party should be/has been in the past. Its current incarnation is nothing like the party of Lincoln, Roosevelt, Taft or Ike. Thank god we have a liberal Republican running for Governor here... coincidentally she's from my small town of 17k, I actually attended high school with her son. I'm surprised I may vote Republican on the state level... Maybe the party is finally being taken back from the extreme right?

"..Governor Schwarzenegger has been an ally for our community."

I've got news for "your community," Democrats have your number. Some facts: in 2004, John Kerry and Democrats in general carried Michigan. Yet that same year, nearly two-thirds of women and blacks voted in favor of banning gay marriage. Couldn't have happened if Democrats didn't want it.

In 2006: Democrats carried Wisconsin, yet that same year, voters approved banning gay marriage. Couldn't have happened if Democrats didn't want it.

Conservative Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney signed into law legislation enabling gay marriage in his state. Couldn't have happened if a conservative Republican didn't want it.

The lesson: Democrats ARE NOT allies for your community.

I'm a Republican and have voted in favor of gay marriage, as have the vast majority of Republicans I know.

As I recall, the Democrats are in the majority on the Supreme Court of Massachusetts. Furthermore, a Democratic Governor Howard Dean approved the first civil unions in the US. Governor Corzine, the Democratic New Jersey Governor, signed that state's civil unions law. You mischaracterize New England Republicans with those from the other parts of the nation. Those in New England tend to be considerably more liberal. Consider former Senator Lincoln Chaffee of Rhode Island. libsRfunny sure seems to have a warped sense of humor to think that gays and lesbians are better off with Repubs.

But Bush and Cheney politicized the issue starting way back with Ann Richards. They are the reason that it is a hot button issue.

Don't tell me that republicans are a friend to the gay community because Bush is a republican and he has done more to set back our fight than any other president in history. He actively worked against us whereas other presidents just ignored us causing us to die.

Reagan and Bush I murdered hundreds of thousands of men and women because they wouldn't say one word. AIDS.

Nuff said.

Great story. I've always considered Schwarzenegger to be the truest of the best known Republicans. His reasoning for the first two vetoes seems to be a classical Republican reason that didn't involve protecting marriage's sanctity in the slightest, which is great.

Let the people speak. If the ballot proposal is passed so be it. Each state should have the right on this issue, not the federal government.

California has always been 'ahead of the curve'. It has also been REALLY big on 'what's best for the people'. I can't image that Constitutional Ban would ever make a decent showing on a state ballet.

Don't you mean "ballot"? I had no idea that California had a state ballet troupe.

Governor to Fight Anti Gay Marriage Amendment

HoMosexuals should and must have the same rights as all Americans...

If a HoMosexual wants to Marry another HoMosexual of the same sex, it should be their choice not the Governments.

There should be marriage equality for HoMosexuals.

Since prop22 is a law which was voted on by the people of the state, it is now a LAW! The only way to change it would to be to place it for a revote. It seems that whenever someone disagrees with the gay community they are labeled as bigots. Marriage is defined as a union between a MAN and a WOMAN. The gay community is not being discriminated against because they do not meet the qualifications for marriage. The fact that two men are in love does not mean they should be allowed to get married.

Wait a minute. Haven't California voters already ruled on this in Prop.22?

Prop 22 is a law, but did not amend the Constitution. The bigots in California want to upend the Constitution and insert their mean-spirited, morals legislation to keep gays and lesbians from living as married folk.
