Governor Culver should expect a considerable amount of flak from fellow Democrats for his position. He may define it as a personal decision that should not impact state law, but it does influence the law. Equality is essential when dealing with human rights. As has been expressed repeatedly on Netscape and elsewhere, gays are not asking for special rights. They want equal treatment under the law. Judge Hanson was quite clear in his ruling on the issue.

What a deliciously circular yet fallacious argument.
As usually happens in these discussions... folks fail to understand that there are two institutions of marriage...Civil and religious...
While there may not be, as you say, any biological reasons to extend marriage to all yet there are several thousand civil rights and privileges and well as responsibilities which are!
By your definition sterile, or non-'productive' couples or jailed felons should be banned from marriage....but they are not....
Perhaps you could explain that little inconsistency?

Yes David,
My parents were sterile. They tried and tried. They adopted children.
By your argument, they couldn't have children by accident. They should not have been allowed to marry?
What about people who simply do not want children at all? They shouldn't be allowed to marry??
Everyone can marry except the GLBT community.
The only thing that I agree with in your statement is that a marriage ban will never hold up under scrutiny.

"There is no reason *NOT* to extend the institution of marriage to other groups"
There. Fixed that for you.

So he doesn't support the Iowa Constitution. How nice. I wonder how much money has been squandered on this issue, only to have it overturned time and time again. It's as though lawmakers don't want to point out to their constituents that you can't overrule your own state Constitution, and they just keep using it as a wedge issue to get votes. I don't know which is more pitiful. Politicians, or voters who just don't get it.

like so many things this is simple . Gays shouldn't get married. its against the normalicy of things . i don't want them killed or beat up i just want them to go away ....and never come back . they are making a bad choice like smoking or drinking to excess these are bad choices driving drunk is a bad choice , so is being queer theres nothing "Gay " about geting a penis up the butt.as the word was orginaly ment . i feel they should all get together n buy an island some where to pratice this preverted way of Death/life for death it is from aids or some other preverted act , this way they could do what they liked on thier island and the normal people wouldn't have to be bothered with them .

KnightsDragon2---You are too simple to deserve a response, but what the hell... Go back to your dungeon and stop trying to converse with intelligent people. Not only are you obtuse, but you're weird and uninformed too. Now go away.

Take your statement, subsitute "straight" every time you wrote "gay" or "queer", and read it to yourself in the mirror. That might give you a taste of what we normal queers put up with from bigoted straights all the time. We're tired of the foolishness, we just want to live our lives in peace, treated equally, as all citizens should be.

How does it affect you personally? Can you please tell me just one way that it affects you?
Why do you need an opinion on it?? How does my love life even enter into your shpere of consciousness?
You are the one who is not normal. To harbor such bigoted hatred for no reason. That can't be normal. I hope all of your children are gay. I would LOVE to see you tell your own child that they should go to an island to die.

You're beautiful when you're vindictive.
I'll handle this-
I wouldn't bring up death so much, KDtoo. Neocon Fundamentalist Christians WORSHIP Thanatos (Death) with their insane assertion that "you only live after you die," their infatuation with torture and images of death like the Crucifixion and the worship of a dead guy and all the saint martyr stories with their paranoid, fascinating gory details, AND praying for Armageddon and the Death of All Things. And hoping that starting wars will make that happen.
I just don't know hardly any gay folks so spiritually entrenched with death.
Let's not forget Reverend Falwell stigmatizing aids victims and blocking research until it became a world-wide epidemic.
You did that.

Care to state a valid reason as to why?
Or maybe what differences it make to your own personal life?

So as a Good American you see something wrong with equal treatment of all citizens? Your failure to support and defend the Constitution of the United States is duly noted. The next time your at a parade or the local high school and they raise the flag, you need not throw your hand over your heart and recite the pledge since you do not believe in it tenets of "liberty and justice for all" unless they are exactly like yourself.

I belive this horrible war is wrong! I believe that stealing elections is wrong. I belive that devaluing the dollar and destroying the credibility of our nation is wrong. But those things actually affect me. I may not be a supporter of Bush, but he is "legally" the president and I have to legally support him with my money.
See?
Now. You don't have to be pro-gay. You don't have to march in a parade or even be nice to your gay neighbor. But you do have to allow the same LEGAL rights that are afforded to all American citizens.
It is right. It is time. And it is the only choice.

Harbeas- my question was simple, without any agression whatsoever. You are so against it, I'd think you could give at least one reason. Because it's wrong? is that your answer? I think asking how it would affect your life is an extremely valid question. If something harms you, more people might agree with you, including myself.

If gay marriage will not cause you to leave your wife and marry your current boyfriend then why should you care one iota. As granny used to say, "if it ain't no skin off of your butt why stick your nose in to it?"
Oh, your just expressing your bigotry for one and all to see.

promiscuity runs in both hetrosexuals and homosexuals. Same with disease and public health.
pedophilia/child rape has nothing to do with hetrosexuals or homosexuals.
todays marriage does not protect children, parents protect children, and obviously the parents do not need to be married.
I was always under the impression 2 people got married because they LOVED each other.
You don't need anything from the government to have a family, nor to have children, just 2 able bodied opposite sex, sexual intercourse.
Traditional families are nice, I grew up in one, as well as every single gay person I know. It's not todays homosexuals that are changing the rates of traditional families, and changing the meanings of them, hetrosexuals are doing that all by themselves. In todays world, there are many different terms for family, none more important then the other types, as long as there is LOVE,security, a place to call home... remember 'Home is where the heart is'

Halko wrote Without offspring, society will cease to exist. Society requires people.
By what stretch of your wildest imagination do you come up with the idea that if same sex couples are allowed to get married that there will no longer be any "offspring". Do you really think that gay people getting married will make heterosexuals so mad that they will stop screwing each other just to show those gay people how wrong it is for them to be messing with the sanctity of marriage? Just how long do you foresee this heterosexual boycott of sex to last. Will it cause a reduction in the population of the planet as a whole or will it only effect the United States? Should we prepare the schools to be turned into nursing homes since there will be nor more children? Just what other punishments do the straights have in store for this society in which gays will have such an influence because some of them had the audacity to want to be married to the person they love? DavidH-Um- who is having ill adjusted offspring???
not sure what the stats are on percentage of homosexuals in prison, but I'm guessing it's very low.
I hardly think the Earth is in danger of a lack of people, I feel it's over populated now. since the 60s it has doubled. I personally feel we need many more couples who make the decision not to have children, or enough that they can realistically support, or adopt unwanted children. Most of the people who think about those things are usually generally better adjusted people who actually take personal responsibility for their life.
I'm totally for gay marriage, I think every American adult should have equal opportunity to marry another adult they love. What would EVER give me the right to say otherwise?
It's wrong to deny equal rights. Hetrosexuals can marry the people they love, I did! why not homosexuals?
