Studies have shown that years of smoking shortens the lifespan of the smoker from 1 to 7 years. Recent analysis of the age of death in Norway and Denmark for gays who are legally married suggests that engaging in homosexual behavior reduces lifespan by 24 years!

Sorry to hear that. Are there any papers you can lead us to that show an alternate conclusion?

I agree with you Neophile. The overwhelming dissent I have with this article is that it is spun to make it sound like they are warning us of an impending health problem, when really, it is a bogus study put out by a homophobic hate group that reached its conclusion BEFORE the research even began. The group is opposed to gays and lesbians; hence, they worked their study around that premise.
Give me a bunch of numbers, and I can prove that smoking is healthy.

Sorry, but the so-called facts rely on a lot of red herrings. The claim as to the motives of why homosexuality was de-listed from the DSM had less to do with political motives and more to do with the fact that being gay is really not an illness.
Also, I doubt the accuracy of the study, since it is quite difficult to identify as GLBT some people when they get older because they truly fear retribution for coming out. Many older men refuse to come out even on anonymous surveys thanks to a bigoted society. This study proves nothing of the kind and is skewed.
Considering the source of the study, I would not be surprised if next they attempt to prove creation did happen as the Bible claims.

On December 2, 1983, the American Psychological Association sent Paul Cameron a letter informing him that he had been dropped from membership. Early in 1984, all members of the American Psychological Association received official written notice that "Paul Cameron (Nebraska) was dropped from membership for a violation of the Preamble to the Ethical Principles of Psychologists" by the APA Board of Directors

The site quoted has a lot of information on this supposed researcher, including a bio and questions on his method of sampling for research.
I suggest you take time to find out all the facts before you venture an opinion.

Given the generally "loving" and "nurturing" attitudes of the rest of society, especially the homophobic segments, no wonder that the resulting stresses reduce homosexuals' life-span! I wouldn't go so far as to assume those researchers are deeply saddened by their "findings"...
For those too convinced of the rightness of their "ways", why do you suppose Blacks in the US have typically higher rates of HIGH BLOODPRESSURE? And malnourishment? And "destructive" lifestyles?

You said it, Kedirian, and boy, then you were provided with a comment that backed up your comment.
Can we call it research now?
But no, in all seriousness thats exactly what I thought when I read that article. Most gay people are forced to lead such a stressful life for who they are that it's no wonder they die sooner.

Sure don't mean to offend you Neophile. I posted this because it seemed to show a concern that endangered the health and well being of the gay community.

You may not have offended Neophile, but I take offense to this garbage study being posted. One cannot change sexual identity simply because some group of religious nutjobs holds prayer circles.
The study is flawed because it enters the discussion with the premise that being gay is automatically inferior to being straight. The study has a horrible bias and cannot be believed on its face. Hence, I am sinking this stinker.

Despite anti-HIV drugs slashing the death rate due to AIDS, a recent study reveals that we still have a long way to go.
A study of a group of patients called the Swiss HIV Cohort reveals that people with HIV are still at least seven times more likely to die than HIV-negative people of a similar age, and the overall death rate is 10 times normal.
The Swiss Cohort is one of the most intensively studied groups of HIV patients in the world; since 1990 it has included over 12,500 people, or about 50 percent of the people diagnosed with HIV in Switzerland.
During the study period, which spanned 12 years from the beginning of 1990 to the end of 2001, one in three cohort members (3,630 in all) died.

"The prevalence of homosexuals declines because of the early death of those engaging in same-sex sex, and if the
practice of homosexuality were to be directly tied to a foreshortening of life..."
Garbage! One cannot establish a cause and effect relationship between having same-sex intercourse and longevity. They may be coincidental, but not causal. I find the studies claims totally bogus given the so-called "research" organization used to run the study. I also would note that people from older generations tend not to come out as much as younger people do for fear of retribution. The study is meaningless.

Not so fast, said Darren Spedale, a law and business student at Stanford University, who studied divorce rates in Denmark in 1996-97, seven years after same-sex registered partnerships were legalized. He found that 17 percent of gay partnerships ended in divorce compared with 46 percent of the straight relationships.

As has been claimed in numerous other articles, people in committed relationships have longer life spans. I could make the connection that gays seem likelier to remain in relationships than straight people; hence, gays live longer.
I do not take that claim seriously at all; in fact, I take it as seriously as the article presented here.

David you seem to be a one man hate group similar to the one Neophile describes in his opening post. Since you seem not to be able to engage in a civil discourse one can only assume you are more about hate and less about enlightenment. Hate is a cancer that will consume you. But if it gives you pleasure, so be it. I for one look forward to learning something other than how to use the neg button in this thread. Paranoia does not become you.

Spin it all you like, formidable, but the research here is meaningless. It is a bogus study, like it or not.

david is not a HATER.
I AM.
And his tone of unbelief isn't even CLOSE to hate!
Would anybody like me to bring some REAL hate to the table?
I'm still hot from PERMANENTLY DESTROYING the Ann Coulter posts here on Netscape and would be happy to initiate "Scorched Earth" on this site...
Don't call people who are debating haters.
You may invoke the real thing...

David is NOT hateful. He is justifiably irritated by your smugness. The conclusion that homosexuals' lifespan is shorter than that of average straight couples is, unfortunately, correct. What is incorrect is the inference that homosexuality is the cause, rather than the typically stressful existence of most homsexuals due the intolerance of society. There are no valid comparisons to be made here. Homosexual marriage has not been permitted anywhere long enough to do such a study. Get back to us in 50 years.

I LIKE you...
Give me the secret hate signal, I'm ready to exchange genetic hate material in a writhing breeding ball of hate.
Do come in...
I want to touch your heart of hate...and lick the bile from it...just come over here, c'mon baby, just ak me how they brought Matthew Shepard to a hospital one mile from my house to die when white trash Fundamentalist Christians savagely beat him and left him tangled upright on a barb-wire fence as a tribute to their handy work.
Or how they crowed about killing a gay man until they found out about hate crime laws and suddenly changed their story to "We was robbing him..."
Or how a white sororority from ColoState had a float in the homecoming parade with a strung up scarecrow (mocking dead fellow student Shepard) as a humorous outlet for their upper-class, over-privileged sickness (ColoState kicked them out, by the way...)
ASK ME, A$$HOLES!

Modeling the impact of HIV disease on patterns of mortality in gay and bisexual men.
Hogg RS, Strathdee SA, Craib KJ, O'Shaughnessy MV, Schechter MT, Montaner JS.
Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12; 10: 58 (abstract no. 184C).
British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, Vancouver, Canada.
OBJECTIVE: To assess how HIV infection and AIDS impacts on mortality rates for gay and bisexual men. METHODS: Data were obtained from 1987-92 for Vancouver, a large Canadian urban centre. Mortality was assessed by comparing age-specific patterns of death and life expectancy at age 20 years. Three scenarios were compared with assumed proportions of gay and bisexual men ranging of 3%, 6% and 9% of the population age > or = 20 years. For each scenario, non-HIV deaths were distributed according to proportion of the total population, but 95% of HIV deaths were distributed to gay men as this is the proportion of AIDS cases in homosexual/bisexual men in this centre.
